FAQs

Are you a writer or editor/anthologist?

I am both! I write novels and short stories, and I also compile and edit anthologies in which I invite other writers to work with me on the project.

Are you traditionally published or self published?

Both! My traditionally published books include Being Ace, These Bodies Ain’t Broken, Being Aro, Untamed and Fragmented. My self published books include The Rhythm of My Soul, Girl Vanishing, Forever Is Now, It’s Always Been You, My Heart to Find, and Spirit of Fire.

Where can I buy signed copies of your work?

I try and sign my books in my local towns and cities in Devon, England, when I see them, so it’s worth asking my local indie store (First Draft Books, Bovey Tracey) or Waterstones in Exeter or Newton Abbot.

I also take part in a lot of book events and am happy to sign books at each of these. I can also take signed book orders directly for my self published books through my contact form.

Where can I find a list of content warnings for your books?

Right here!

Why do you publish under different names?

This is mainly a marketing thing so readers know what to expect! Madeline Dyer is my main writing name that I publish YA and adult horror, speculative fiction, thrillers, dark contemporary, dystopian, fantasy, and science-fiction under. I also compile and edit anthologies under this name. The books that were previously published under Elin Dyer have now been re-released under Madeline Dyer, to make things simpler.

My romance and women’s fiction can be found under my pen name Elin Annalise.

And my academic PhD work is under Madeline Dyer Statham.

Do I need to read your books in a specific order?

Most of my books are standalones (even those grouped in series, such as the Aces in Love series and the Dangerous Ones trilogy) but there are some that need to be read in order. These are the Untamed series (Untamed, Fragmented, Divided, Destroyed) and the Spirit of Fire series (Spirit of Fire, Blood of the Phoenix). It is also beneficial to read the Roseheart Ballet Academy books in order (The Rhythm of My Soul, Swans in the Dark, Phantoms Under the Lake), as there is some character crossover, but it’s not absolutely necessary. All other books can be read in any order.

Are your books in Kindle Unlimited?

I have been experimenting with KU for my self published books but I’m in the process of moving all these books out of the program and back to the ‘wide’ platforms.

Do you have audiobooks of all your books?

At the moment, only some of my titles are available in audio. I wish there were more, but it depends on whether the audio rights have been sold to audio publishers–which also often depends on previous sales.

Can I find your books in libraries?

Yes! And please do! In the UK, writers get paid a small amount for every library loan. You can request my books in either physical format or eBook through your local library.

How quickly do you write?

I am very prolific! I am just a fast writer and the way my brain works is that I have to produce my books fast. I can write 4,000-6,000 words a day, and I always have more than one project on the go.

It can take me anywhere from a month to four years to write a first draft that I am happy with (sometimes it takes me a long time to work out what the story is!) and I typically write at least seven drafts before it’s either sent to my publisher or the editors I use for my self-published work.

Some years, I end up with a lot of releases, whereas others can be quieter. But typically my books aren’t written in the same year that they are published.

The speed at which I write is also why I traditionally publish and self publish.

Do you use AI to produce your books?

No.

How can I contribute a short story to your next anthology?

My recruitment process for filling anthologies varies from book to book, but where I can I do try and offer an open call for submissions from new and unpublished writers. I’ll announce such opportunities on my social media (mostly Instagram and Facebook) and I’ll also add details to the applicable pages of this website. I also directly invite writers whose books I’ve already read and loved to work with me on anthologies. A couple of times, when my new anthology deals have been announced in Publisher’s Marketplace, I’ve had a writer or their agent reach out directly to me to see if they can submit a story–and sometimes this leads to their inclusion!

Who is your agent?

Amy Collins at Talcott Notch Literary Services.

Can you visit my town/school/book event?

I love visiting readers! Please reach out either via my contact form or via the publicist listed on my Contact page if the proposed visit is specific to a book. I am also always open to virtual/online visits.

Can you blurb my book?

Please contact me through my agent Amy Collins. Her details are on my contact page.

Can you give me feedback on my work in progress?

I’m no longer open to (paid) critique work, but I am teaching a number of online creative writing classes and you can work with me that way!
