Author Interview With Cynthia Woolf

Following my previous post about Cynthia Woolf’s ‘Heiress Bride’, I was delighted when I got the chance to conduct a full interview with her, this time about her new book, ‘Redeemed by A Rebel‘.

Firstly, here’s a little about Cynthia:

Cynthia Woolf is the author of six historical western romance books and one short story with more books on the way. She was born in Denver, Colorado and raised in the mountains west of Golden. She spent her early years running wild around the mountain side with her friends.

Their closest neighbor was one quarter of a mile away, so her little brother was her playmate and her best friend. That fierce friendship lasted until his death in 2006.

Cynthia was and is an avid reader. Her mother was a librarian and brought new books home each week. This is where young Cynthia first got the storytelling bug. She wrote her first story at the age of ten. A romance about a little boy she liked at the time.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia’s father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similiarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and the great friends she’s made at CRW for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

Now, onto the interview!

Redeemed by a Rebel

-Tell us a little about ‘Redeemed by a Rebel’. What can readers expect from it? How does it differ from your other books?

Redeemed by a Rebel is the first book in the Destiny in Deadwood series. It’s still a western but this series is about three brothers and what happens to them in Deadwood during the goldrush in 1876.

– How long did it take you to write it? Can you describe your writing process?

It took me about four months to write the book. My process is very simple since I’m a pantser. I get an idea for a series and make a few notes about the leading characters and what the series is about overall. Then I start writing. For this series I started with what turns out to be the last book. I got to a point where I didn’t know what was happening to the characters and realized that was because their story wasn’t ready to be told. So I started over with what became Redeemed by a Rebel.

– The cover is beautiful. Can you give us a small insight into how this cover was created?

My covers are designed by Romcon Custom Covers. The cover designer for Romcon is a friend of mine and I’m very lucky, in that I tell her a little about what the series is about and give her examples of the kinds of covers that I like and then I just let her create.

– And ‘Redeemed by a Rebel’ is the first title in the ‘Destiny in Deadwood’ series. (I must say I LOVE your series name). Did you decide it would be part of a series before or after writing the first book?

Healed by a Heart

Healed by a Heart

I decided that it would be part of a series before I started writing. In this case, I had the covers for all three books done at the same time and knew the titles and a bit of what the stories would be before I started Redeemed.

– What enticed you into the world of historical western romances?

I’ve always liked western romances and until a few years ago, I read historical romances (western, medieval, Scottish, you name it) almost exclusively. Now my reading time is so very short, that I read a lot of different genres, but usually they are novellas.

– And you’ve written a short story too! How did you find writing a short story differed from a novel-length work?

Short stories are harder to write because you have to have a beginning, middle and end in such a short amount of words.

– Have you got any other projects on the go?

I’ve finished the next in the Destiny in Deadwood series, HEALED BY A HEART and am going through the editing process now. I’ve included the cover for that book which I hope to have out before the end of May. I’ve also got the third book started. It’s called SEDUCED BY A SINNER and hopefully will be out in August or September. I’ve a novella coming out from the group of historical writers that I belong to, LOVE HISTORICALS. That will be coming out in time for Christmas, but we don’t have a title yet.

– You use to write scifi. Do you have any plans to delve into another completely new genre any time soon?

I really enjoyed writing the sci-fi but the market for it is very tough and I couldn’t find my niche. I don’t have any plans at the present time to explore any other genres.

– What is your favorite part of writing?

Discovering the new characters and who they are a little bit before I start writing the book.

– How has being an author impacted your life?

Being an author has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I’m able to work at home, tell my stories and pay my bills too. The stress of the corporate world is far behind me and that’s where I hope to leave it.

 Thanks, Cynthia!
