Review: EVERY OTHER DAY by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

We’ll start with the quick review that I left on Goodreads:

Every Other DayEvery Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At first, I wasn’t quite sure about this book. There was a lot of ‘attitude’ in its writing style, but I grew to love this way of writing, and how it reflected the main character’s personality. I also loved the humour.

Supporting characters were richly drawn, although Skylar’s brothers all seemed to merge together as I was reading it…

What really impressed me were the plot twists. I did not see those coming!

I’d recommend this book for anyone who enjoys urban fantasy.

Now: onto my slightly more spoilery comments… but I don’t think I can talk about this book as much as I want to–and show how amazing it is–without directly talking about aspects of the plot and characters.

If you’re looking for a book that has a whole new take on vampires, then this is it. I loved how Barnes redefined the whole idea of what the modern vampire is. This is now Edward and Bella love story.

There was something very compelling about Zev, and his chemistry with Kali was extremely well done–especially as for the most part of the book, they don’t meet in person. Yet, by the time Zev was physically introduced to us, I felt like I knew him. And that only made the plot twist that was coming even more heart-wrenching.

And plot twists! This author sure knows how to write them! As a writer myself, I do find it’s harder to surprise me, as I know how plots work. And sure, I did work out that Kali was a vampire long before it was revealed, but the truth about her mother (both of them) really surprised me.

I also really enjoyed Kali’s relationship with her father. It felt believable.

The world itself was very well written. I liked how it was both familiar and unfamiliar. Uncanny, in a way. The references to Darwin alongside supernatural and unnatural creatures was especially well done, and had just the right amount of humour thrown in.

This is a book I’d highly recommend, and I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author.
