Author Interview with Aven Ellis

Aven EllisToday, we have an interview with Aven Ellis, whose book, Connectivity, releases in Octorber 2013.

Hi Aven! Nice to meet you! So, what exactly do you write?

Humorous Romance, both New Adult and Contemporary.

How would you describe yourself in a short third person bio?

Aven Ellis lives to write stories about the girl trying to figure out her career, her dreams, and the guy. Aven loves meeting people and chatting on social media (probably too much so), cooking, shopping, working out, drinking coffee and drooling over hot British actors. She is also obsessed with any show featuring Gordon Ramsay.

What made you initially want to write? Has your motivation changed since then?

I have wanted to write since high school. That has never changed!

What do you think is the most important part of writing?

Figuring out the flaws of a character and watching them grow during the journey in the story.

What is your favourite part of writing?

I love writing dialogue. Love, love, love it. Probably because I am a talker!

Tell us an interesting fact about you.

I can remember all the previous contestants on The Bachelor/The Bachelorette reality show but forget when my bills are due…

Do you have a day-job, (other than writing)?

Yes, I work in live event production for a sports TV network.

Do you prefer a physical book or an ebook? Why?

I like both, actually. ebook when on the go; physical books at home.

Tell us about your novel, Connectivity.

Connectivity is the journey of Mary-Kate (MK) Grant, a young Chicago woman working in televison. All business-with zero time for romance–MK works as an assitant at a sports network to get her foot in the door of the industry. Just as MK is at the point where she can make a career move, British social media mogul William Cumberland purchases the group of networks where MK works. When William selects her to be his personal assistant, all bets are off. He has the ability to see through her and challenges everything she thought she wanted…including romance. 🙂

So, how long does it take you, on average, to complete a first draft?

Six months. I write two books per year.

Which projects are you working on at the moment?

I am working on another New Adult romantic comedy.

How do you come up with the titles for your books? And do you have the final title before completing your book, or after?

I select the title during character sketch/outline process.

How has writing changed your life?

I have met so many amazing people because of it! I have been utterly blown away by how many fantastic people I have met in the process of promoting my books.

Where do you get inspiration for writing from? Do you listen to music whilst writing or have a ‘writing cave’?

I can write anywhere so no writing cave. But I do put together a playlist for each book on Spotify.

Is there a particular form, style or genre that you’d like to have a go at writing? Why?

No. I’m writing exactly what I want to write now.

Favourite book and/or author(s)?

The late Maeve Binchy wrote beautiful books. Very different from what I write, but I love them.

Do you think it’s necessary to have a degree (of any sort) in order to be a successful author?

No. I studied journalism in college and that did help with the technical aspects of writing, but I learned more about the creative part from attending conferences, reading other writer’s tips, etc.

Thank you very much for your time.

No, thank you, Madeline. I enjoyed this!
