NaNoWriMo 2012 – Day 11
Okay, so I haven’t been keeping you as updated as I should have. Having just finished my morning session of writing for today, my word count is going well. Already I’m at 40,074 words. I think that the finished book will be around 75k.
In case you didn’t know, the book I’m writing, is called ‘Forbidden Hearts’, you can get the scope of it here.
And it’s only really been in the last few days that I’ve begun to really get into writing this book. At first, I found it hard to write from my main character’s first-person perpective. And then I realised why. I didn’t know her well enough.
Because originally, I’d started writing from the first person perspective of Rose, then switching to a third person narrative of a few of the other main characters, just as I was beginning to get to know Rose, I kind of ended up stopping myself.
And, of course, as soon as I realised this I made sure that I stuck to Rose’s first person for the rest of the time. And now, as I’m writing more and more stuff from her point of view, I feel that I’m beginning to really get to know her as a character. Indeed, now, I don’t even want to write from Zaklos’ or Farrell’s perspectives, because, ultimately, you can see their motivations if you read between the lines of Rose’s narrative.
I feel this has made my writing tighter. But, at the moment, I haven’t gone back and changed the seven or eight scenes that aren’t from Rose’s point of view. No, that’s work for December. But I have decided that I will be probably adding in a new sub-plot in those spaces, as I feel that those scenes aren’t necessary. Yeah, sure, they showed the others’ thoughts, but if I’m clever I should be able to show that through their dialogue and how they act towards Rose in the rest of the book. Also, by taking out Zaklos’ sections, in particular, I feel that more of a sense of a mystery will build up, and the outcome will be even more surprising.
So, yeah, that’s it for this morning. Hopefully, tonight, I’ll get some more writing time. But, I am so excited about this book now!
[If there are any typos, please excuse them–my spell-check has broken, and I’m rubbish at proof-reading].
